Daniel awoke with a start then smiled and pulled Megan’s naked body closer to his. His eyes slid shut again with a contented sigh before they flew back open a second later. He reached for his phone and Megan stirred against him. When he saw that they’d only dozed off for about an hour, he reclaimed his spot and smoothed his hand over her back.

“Shhh. It’s okay,” he whispered. “You can sleep more.”

She stretched languorously, her arched back pressing the front of her more firmly against him. His body responded instantly and his hand traveled down to cup and squeeze her round bottom. The depth of his desire for her made his stomach clench with nerves, but he couldn’t stop aching for her even if he wanted to.

“Hmm.” She smiled sleepily at him. “Are you sure you want me to go back to sleep? I’m getting mixed signals here.”

He would never stop hungering for her, but more than anything, he wanted to wake up beside her in the morning. The thought startled him enough to bolt out of bed. He didn’t do sleepovers. He didn’t even bring women to his place as a rule. Whatever this was, he had to watch his step.

“I should take you home,” he said, gathering his clothes off the floor.

She sat up slowly in bed with the cover held against her chest. A hurt frown flitted across her face, but she said, “Okay.”

“I don’t want your father to worry,” he mumbled, immediately contrite for his brusqueness.

“You’re right.” She dropped the sheet and got to her feet. Despite his sudden panic and need for space, he stared at her naked body like a man starved.

With her back turned to him, she slipped on her lingerie and stepped into her dress. She held up her hair in one hand and looked over her shoulder at him. “Do you mind?”

He wordlessly zipped up her gown while battling a wild need to rip it off her again. Because he needed to touch her, he rested his hands on her shoulders. After a pause, she turned around to face him, dislodging his hold.

“I can’t have you drive me home,” she said with a slight arch of her brow. “I don’t want my father to know about our...fling. It would be cruel to give him false hope.”

“Of course. I understand.” He took a step back at her frostiness and stood taller to cover his inexplicable hurt. What had happened tonight was just sex. She didn’t really want him. She’d walked out on him once before.

He tamped down on the bitterness churning inside him. He was being unreasonable. How else was she supposed to behave after he’d all but kicked her out of his bed? He followed her as she walked out to the living room to retrieve her clutch. Then he stood indecisively near the edge of the living room as she tapped into her phone.

“My ride should be here soon. I’ll go wait down in the lobby.” She glided toward the elevator, slipping on her shoes as she went.
